Subject: [*] Audio Interface: Software for Mac users with sight difficulties
Audio Interface is a free control panel, designed to make
Mac computer use easier for those with sight difficulties.
Audio Interface enables the user to move the mouse over
a menu item or dialog box item and have it spoken out using
Apple's PlainTalk software technology.
Most menus and menu items can be read, and Audio Interface
recognises such menu attributes as "unavailable", "checked", and
"marked with a diamond". An option is provided to choose the
desired length of description for each item.
When dialog boxes appear on the screen, Audio Interface
attempts to read the main message in the dialog box. Similarly,
the mouse can be moved over text descriptions and button names
in the dialog box to have them spoken.
With enough interest in the software, future improvements
and enhancements will be planned. Support may be extended to
other parts of the Mac interface, with the aim of making the Mac
a more accessible computer to visually impaired users.
If you have any compatibility problems, please let me
know. Some testing has been done, but it is impossible for me to
test the software on every possible configuration.

Subject: [*] BatteryMinder 1.1; monitors remaining battery life
BatteryMinder is a tiny program that helps you predict how much time you
have left on your PowerBook battery. It allows you to toggle Appletalk and
Sound with convenient buttons in its unobtrusive little window and is smart
enough to optionally turn Appletalk OFF when it is run and back ON when
quit. This makes Appletalk always load at startup if you put the program
into your Startup folder. Double-clicking BatteryMinder's window puts your
PowerBook to sleep.
Version 1.1 adds better handling of Appletalk being in use. (Thanks to
Steve Ashcroft)
It also has the added benefit of being entirely free!

Subject: [*] Book Inventory Stack; a Hypercard database for books
Hi y'all -
Attached is a binhex'ed, sea'ed HyperCard stack (Books 1.0) to keep track
of your books. It is much simpler than some of the other, academic stacks
I have seen. Frankly, I like those, but they have too much information for
my purposes, so I wrote this one. This stack is, as are almost all stacks,
simple to use; I do, however, recommend reading the intro card.
Enjoy, and let me know what you think.
$8.00 Shareware. Permission is granted for this stack to be distributed;
however, I hold copyright. Do not distribute modified copies of this
stack.

Subject: [*] Cheshire; a completely esoteric, uncategorizable program
The application "Cheshire" is neither a game nor a utility. Rather, it is
an anomaly: a completely esoteric, uncategorizable program.
The idea is simple: the program creates a picture of the cheshire cat
which, as cheshire cats are wont to do, smiles. The cat disappears,
leaving just a floating smile. Then, the application erases itself.
Just so you don't go accidentally erasing the cat, there are two
identical copies of Cheshire in the archive. Both copies, according to
Disinfectant 3.5, are virus free.
I am not the author of "Cheshire." I'm not sure who the author is. I have
only owned this program since I first had a Mac in 1988, and occasionally
run it because I find it mildly intriguing.

Subject: [*] CommConnect XFCN: Communications Toolbox support for HyperCard
CommConnect is an XFCN for HyperCard which lets you use the
Communications Toolbox for sending or receiving data.
What makes CommConnect different from other communications
externals is that CommConnect works on all the new Macs, such as
PowerBooks, Duos, and the AV Macs' GeoPort.
Using a configuration dialog box, the user can select a
communications tool, such as the Serial tool (for the data or modem
ports, for instance) or the Apple Modem tool, such as for dialing up
to another computer.
CommConnect requires either System 7, or System 6 with the
Communications Toolbox software installed. You will also need at
least one connection tool, such as the Serial tool.

Subject: [*] DeepDischarge 1.1.0; a Powerbook battery utility
Keywords: POWERBOOK BATTERY DISCHARGE NICAD CHARGER ADAPTER
DeepDischarge 1.1.0 for PowerBooks (by Jeremy Kezer)
DeepDischarge is a utility for any PowerBook that uses a nickel-cadmium (NiCad)
or nickel-hydride (NiHy) battery. Over time, these batteries are susceptible
to a "memory effect", which can reduce their battery capacity. The memory
effect can be cured by fully discharging the battery before recharging it.
DeepDischarge provides a safe, fast and automatic way to deep discharge your
PowerBook's battery. DeepDischarge automatically bypasses the low battery
warning dialogs, and prevents the "soft" sleep brought on by those dialogs.
Instead, DeepDischarge will run your PowerBook's battery down until the "hard"
hardware shutdown occurs, which is at a lower voltage. This provides the best
discharge possible.
Version 1.1.0 adds support for Duos, as well as a "terminal discharge" feature
to prevent aborting program if battery voltage is too low to operate normally.
Shareware; $5 registration fee suggested. See enclosed docs for more
information.

Subject: [*] GoldPusher; a game of puzzles, strategy and action
GoldPusher
by Daniel and Willem Vree
VreeWare*
GoldPusher is a game with a mixture of puzzles, strategy and action.
It is strongly inspired by a commercial game named "Leprechaun".
However, it has quite different rules, graphics and features. And this
game is VreeWare*!
Features:
- 45 rooms with action, strategy and difficult puzzles.
- make your own rooms with the graphical editor
- choose your own order to complete the puzzles
- save feature remembers which rooms you have completed
- topscore
- fast color animation and very fast BW-animation for old-mac users.
- multi-channel sound (SoundManager 3.0) otherwise single channel
sound
System Requirements.
When Color-QuickDraw is available and the monitor is in a color-mode,
the game runs in 8-bit color. In that case GoldPusher requires 900k of
memory. Otherwise the game runs in black-and-white and only requires
about 400k of memory.
In black-and-white mode the game is optimized with assembler-code for
old-mac+ users. Hopefully this assembler-code also runs on other macs
in BW-mode yielding blazing speed.
When system 6.0.7 or later is available, with SoundManager 3.0, the
game uses multi-channel sound, otherwise it uses the old mac+ style
sound procedures.
GoldPusher can run on very old mac's with very old systems.

Subject: [*] How to Print Crop Marks Only in PageMaker 5 Documents
Aldus made the dubious decision that most people using PageMaker print
documents containing either gray-scale or color information. Therefore
in PageMaker 5.0 checking "Printer's Marks" in the Print Dialog inserts
not only crop marks but color/grayscale bars and registration marks on
every page. Even checking "Print all colors as black" (the only option
to tell PM5 that the document is B&W) does not suppress these extra
marks, which are distracting and use up extra toner.

Subject: [*] Speak Note 2.0.1; hear your alerts and notifications
There was some confusion over my recent submission of Speak Note GH 2.0.1.
This resubmission is identical with the exception that the
daemon has been modified slightly.
Enclosed for your enjoyment is version 2.0.1 of Speak Note GH, which I
recommend you store under the name SpeakNote_gh_201.hqx. It is stored in
Stuffit Install Maker format (thanks Leonard R.), so installation is a three
click process.
Description:
Speak Note GH is a control panel, init, and background only
application (daemon) which uses the Speech Manager to speak the contents
of alerts and notifications.
Featuring:
* Speaks the text of Alert dialogs and Notifications
* Configurable voices
* AppleScriptable daemon
* Balloon Help
* Option to be quiet on dismissal
* Option to not speak on quickly dismissed Alerts
* Subscribers can use the daemon over AppleTalk networks
Caution (have some):
People who have beta versions of this software should throw all
previous versions out (including preference files).
For goodness sake, read the read me files if you plan on using Macintalk
Pro voices.
There seems to be some conflict with Star Trek the 25th Anniversary game.
Requirements:
System 7, and the Speech Manager required; Sound Manager 3.0 recommended.
Cost:
$10 Shareware. Subscribers will get a stand alone program which
allows using the Speech Manager over AppleTalk networks. (See IRS, I am
trying to make a profit, those Section 179 deductions of computer
equipment were not a tax dodge.)

Subject: [*] Vocalise XCMD: Add high quality speech to HyperCard
Vocalise is a free XCMD which takes advantage of Apple's
new Speech Manager and PlainTalk software to let you use high
quality speech in your HyperCard stacks.
Vocalise lets you use any of the new voices available,
including the high quality male and female voices, and lets you
speak any text you want, such as text you've entered into a field.
Speaking any text is as simple as adding one line to your
script. Alternatively, you can have more control over the speech,
since you can change both the speaking speed and pitch
independently of each other. You can also pause the speaking
immediately, at the end of the word, or at the end of the sentence.
All vocalise commands are simple to use: for example, you
can use commands such as "speak faster", "speak lower", and
"pause, end of sentence". Full documentation and example scripts
are included with the stack.
Vocalise is free for use in any public domain or shareware
stack. People interested in commercial use should contact me for
more information.

PC BinHex 1.3 University of Minnesota 1992-1993
Overview:
This Utility encodes binary files into a plain text format and
decodes the resulting files into their original state. The
encoding method used is called BinHex. This encoding method
works on any type of file, including formatted word processing
and spreadsheet files, graphics files, and even executable
files (i.e. programs or applications). The encoded file can
also be passed from computer to computer in its encoded form.
The encoding will remain intact and it will be equally
meaningless on all the machines until it is unencoded. To be
usable or readable it must be converted back to its original
format and be run on a compatible computer. This program is
compatible with the Macintosh version of BINHEX and with
POPMail (tm).
Functions:
F1: Access online help.
F2: Bin2Hex - Converts a Binary File to a BinHex encoded File.
F3: Hex2Bin - Converts a BinHex encoded File to a Binary File.
Alt-X: Exit the program.

Subject: Corrections to MacWeek article: Apple Supt Info on Internet
The recent MacWeek article titled: "Apple to put support info on Internet"
written by David Morgenstern had a few errors. I've supplied the correct
information below:
1) Correction to first paragraph: Apple is currently publishing information
and software on the Home Gopher Server on the internet. We will also publish
similiar subsets of information to other online services, including an
expansion of our offerings on the internet.
2) Correction to second paragraph: A subset of approx. 3700 existing Tech
Info Library articles is currently being published to the Home Gopher
Server. The subset is updated monthly, can be searched using the built-in
Gopher Search engine, but do not employ the use of keywords. The complete
Apple Tech Info Library, comprised of over 10,000 articles, is available on
AppleLink and shortly on eWorld, the latter currently in beta testing.
3) Correction to third paragraph: The Apple Tech Info Library is found in
the COMPUTER INFORMATION folder at the top level of the Home Gopher Server.
Apple Software Updates and other Apple support information is found in the
Apple Support Area, located on the Apple Computer Higher Education gopher
server.
* Connecting to the Home Gopher Server:
The host address is: consultant.micro.umn.edu
The IP number is: 134.84.132.4
* TurboGopher Client software for easily accessing the Home Gopher Server
is available via anonymous File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to

I was finally forced to use Windows. (Yes, it was for money.) Although
the feel of the interface was as bad as I had feared, there was one
thing I really liked: the menus. I've been combing the net for something
that could make Mac menus stick like Windows, but I haven't found it
yet. Some come close, but they still hold the mouse button down as you
drag down the menu. I want the submenus to remain inactive until you
click on them; that would be truly useful. None of the worry about
timing the drag so that you don't linger over a submenu too long and
activate it-- it would stay dormant until you specifically requested it
with a mouse click. Does such an extension exist?

Excel 4.0 Quits??
I've had a few users that seem to be having a common problem. They're
using Excel 4.0 (most on System 7.1, one on System 7.0.1; on a variety
of CPUs, from a Mac II with an accelerator to a Mac Quadra 650)
accessing faculty/staff databases in Excel spreadsheets having a lot of
tables and calculations from a Mac IIcx running AppleShare 2.0.1. The
apps are on the individual's machines while the datafiles are on the
server.
Quite often they're getting one of the "The application 'unknown' has
unexpectedly quit" with a type 1 error. According to Ted Landau's book
"Sad Macs, Bombs, and Other Disasters" (which IMHO is a fantastic
resource for troubleshooting local software and sometimes hardware
problems), these unexpectedly quit error messages usually occur due to
software bugs that affect memory management. His solution is to
restart and then increase the preferred size of the memory requirements
in the app's Get Info window.
OK, I'm trying that. It might be a few days before I know if that
going to work. My question to the lists is: Is anybody else
consistently experiencing this in Excel 4.0? Could there be a software
glitch in Excel that could be causing this? I'll use Extensions
Manager to make sure that there's no INIT conflicts going on, but these
machines are using pretty standard INITs: Disinfectant 3.5, QuickMail,
Retrospect Remote, After Dark, and a smattering of other minor ones.
Please let me know if you're getting the same thing happening to you
with Excel 4.0, and what, if anything, you've done to solve it. TIA!

I assume you are using the Ram disk provided in Apple's "Memory" control

but many other RamDisks do.
Since you only have a 4Mb RamDisk, I am assuming you do not want to put the
System Folder on the ramdisk and run off of it. That being so, you should
consider using AppDisk or RamDisk+, two shareware ramdisk programs in
sumex-aim:/info-mac/util. Or you could consider Connectix Maxima, which

macsee4d.zip Read/write Mac disks on PC. DOS & WIN3.x. DEMO
MacSEE v4.0 will read/write Mac disks on your PC in addition to format,
delete, rename, make/remove folder and more. Includes both DOS and
Windows versions. Supports 3.5" floppies, hard disks such as SyQuests
and Bernoulli, and CD-ROM disks (any ASPI SCSI drive such as Magneto
Opticals too).
Requirements: The DOS version requires 640K and some from of device
with which to mount Mac disks whether it be a standard 3.5" floppy
drive, hard drive, or CD-ROM drive. The Windows version requires
Windows.
Changes: New features in v4.0 include the Resource Inspector for
analyzing Mac resources, formatting Mac hard disks such as SyQuests,
and tagged multi-file xfers. Also no longer needs WinASPI drivers for
the Windows version improving compatibility with ASPI hard disks.
This ShareWare demo limits file xfers to 16K.

Quadra 650 will hang and need to be rebooted. Some might consider this behavior
unacceptable.
I called MacWarehouse for technical support, since they take responsibility for
the LinkLink modem, with which they bundle MaxFax. They told me to delete all
of
my old faxes, which didn't help [and didn't make a lot of sense to me anyway].
Since I'd recently started running File Sharing, I did some experimentation and
found that File Sharing indeed seems to be the limiting factor.
On a second call to MacWarehouse, I was told that the problem is due to the
fact
that MaxFax is not 32-bit clean. However, my later experiments indicated that
the symptom occured independently of whether 32 bit addressing was on.
MacWarehouse also told me that they have not heard about an incompatibility
with
File Sharing.
Considering the others problems I have with MaxFax [won't allow discrimination
between incoming data and fax; not compatible with Now Contact], what I'd
really
like to do is to find a replacement. The last time I asked, I couldn't find
anyone using any other fax software with the LineLink modem. Let me try again.
In particular, does FaxSTF work with it?

Subject: Need help from the UK.
At a local bookstore (Barnes & Noble) I ran into a copy of a
really neat looking Mac Magazine called Mac Format. Since I am tired of
Macworld and MacUser's cookie cutter feel, I purchased this one.
It's layout sort of feels like Wired, of course neither are
similar, but the feel I got from the layout was similar.
My problem is I got the April issue, but someone had taken the
disk off of it. So...
I was wondering if some kind person in the UK would either mail me
a diskcopy, compressed, & binhqx'd file of the disk? Or would call the
publisher over there on my behalf. Thanks.
Take care,

Hello,
is there anybody who knows of a neural networks simulator for the
Apple Macintosh? A few days ago, I found a neural networks library

stand-alone application.
By the way, can anybody tell me the address of ImagineThat!, the
company which distributes "Extend"?

Subject: Optimem (Q)
Dear Netters,
before I proceed, PLEASE ANSWER VIA E-MAIL, my digest listserv has not
delivered the past 10 digests!
The question I have is this: Does Optimem work on a 68020 Macintosh LC?
Also where do I get it? It doesn't appear in the Computer Outfitters or
Macconnection catalogs. Is Optimem's function the same as RAMDoubler? And
finally has anyone with an LC (if it works on one) seen more than 10 MB of RAM
addressable?
Thank you.
P.S. When I realized the listserv discrepency, 10 digests too late, I
downloaded them from an info-mac mirror. It will take me some time to read
through those digests.

Subject: removable vs permanent drives
I'm trying to talk my boss into buying some more storage space for my IIsi
(right now i have only an 80meg internal hd). I'm enticed by the
removable drives because they would meet my storage needs in the
foreseeable future and it would afford me the opportunity to keep large
data sets close at hand (no more carrying a tape to the mainframe for
mounting). Also, the removable setups have the advantage of relatively
cheap expansion in the more distant future.
Are there any pros and cons in the removable/permanent arena that are
crucial?
Are there better deals on removables than MacWarehouse's
poweruser/Syquest 105 meg external for about $400?
I would appreciate direct replies, although if there is interest I will
gladly post a summary to the net. Thanks.

Mr. Carey, for nearly two years I have been a *very* satisfied user of the
Quantum Passport XL removable series of hard drives (which was also
marketed by La Cie under the Express label, as I recall). The cost per
megabyte is higher than for a Syquest-type device, but you have a *real*,
fast and rugged hard drive that is useful for much more than simply moving
large files.
The same external chassis can be used with DOS computers (having SCSI host
adapters), and DOS-formatted drive cartridges can even be mounted, and
files accessed, on the Mac desktop. This is especially handy for storing
files that are directly portable across platforms.
The Passport product line was recently acquired by Lockheed MountainGate
(Reno, NV), and for sales brochures and retail price lists, call:

Subject: SE/30 upgrade options
Hi folks,
I've recently come into a (little) windfall, and I'm thinking about
upgrading my SE/30. Currently, it has 8MB RAM, a 40MB (internal) HD and a
105MB external HD. I'm not really needing any more HD space, but what I
would like is more monitor real-estate, and maybe some colour too.
I ftp'd a few files from sumex outlining monitor options for the SE/30,
but they were up three years old, so I was wondering what sort of kit is
around now. I *have* been to the authorised Applecentres in my area of
the UK, but they were only interested in getting me to upgrade to an LC
475 or similar - which I don't want to do - I like my little SE/30, and I
want to keep it.
So, what sort of options do I have? I'm *not* interested in 24-bit
colour; 256 colours would be fine for me, as would 256 greyscales. A
large(ish) monitor would be mandatory (something like 15"-17", though 19"
at a push) and decent speed screen redraws.
Please bear in mind I'm in the UK, so specific product names would be
great since all the dealers here seem to have forgotten about "old" Macs
and only know about "new" peripherals.
Thanks in advance,
/rmt

Subject: Tape Drive and Retrospect(summary)
Thanks to the many people who have responded to my question about TEAC
155 -mechanism tape drives, and retrospect software. Those who own these
drives are happy with them, as they are reliable and fast (when not
compressing the data through the software). Many said that if given the
option, they would prefer a DAT drive (like the APS DAT drive, selling
for under $800!) to the TEAC 155, but they are satisfied with the TEAC.
Retrospect is, from all respondents, the best tape backup program today.
Thanks again to all who responded.

It does not work for me. It did not work with the Final Candidate 1 version,
nor
it works in the released version.
I mailed the bug report to the e-mail address mentioned in the docs before
Telnet went final, but got no reply.

The former is the Final Candidate, the latter is newer (the official released
version).
